Wow!

BMW has issued a modern interpretation of the M1, its 1970s mid-engine supercar — and it looks phenomenal!

The aptly titled M1 Hommage thrusts the original design into the 21st century with low-slung lines, dramatic creases and a commanding road presence that puts many Italian exotics to shame.

Pop-up headlamps are replaced by four circles that squint from behind a bold front fascia. BMW's trademark twin-kidney grille is up front, too, of course.

The tail end proudly wears two BMW logos, one at each side, just like the original, while the neighboring taillamps appear rather sinister — perhaps as a powerful reminder to other motorists of what just left them in the dust.

Also borrowed from its forebear are air vents as well as louvers on the rear window.

While BMW is calling this new M1 a design study, we hope the automaker takes it further and brings this sizzling supercar to fruition. As always, stay tuned to Autobahn Report for the very latest information.
